Chapter Eight

Ajax sat there in the main room long after everyone else had gone to bed. The more he thought about it the more it began to make sense. Mad Dog saw something he was never supposed to see. Only problem was he never told anyone about it. That’s what cost him his life and he knew now that Wynette had nothing to do with it. He felt that right down to his bones.

He reached out and picked up the silver piece. What was someone from the Zetran family doing at the swamp that day? Was one of the Zetran men with Mad Dog that day?

He got up and went down the hall. When he tried Wynette’s door, he found it was locked. He frowned but didn’t force it. He wanted her to trust him. He still thought she knew more than what she said. Again, he thought maybe there was more she did know but wasn’t remembering or maybe she didn’t even realize she knew something important. He’d let her alone tonight but he already posted guards and closed the gates. Everyone in town knew the pair was here already, under the club’s protection. He had no doubt about that. Joel’s neighbors would have already spread that news.

He walked next door and entered his own room. He had to question Nuero’s decision at putting the pair right next to him. He felt the coolness of the AC and worried her room might get too warm tonight.

Then he heard the shower in her room startup. He groaned when he thought about her naked in the shower. Wait, where the hell did that thought come from? Ajax shook his head. He didn’t know but he had to stop obsessing about her.

He walked over to his bed and flopped down on the mattress fully clothed. He laid there thinking about what he’d learned tonight. So lost in thought was he that it took him some time to hear the sobbing from the bathroom next door.

It bothered him, he didn’t know why but it did. This was the woman he had hated and resented for all this time. Now, he had to look at the entire thing differently. He felt guilt at simply believing the courts and the sheriff. He’d believed a lie for all these years since his brother had been murdered.

He frowned as he laid there and listened. He had to see what it must have been like for her, all this time.

Finally, after twenty minutes or so, the water shut off and now, no sounds came from next door. He listened for it, so he knew. He laid there for a while longer and finally fell asleep.

A few hours later, something woke him up again and he laid there listening. This wasn’t the sobbing he heard before but he wasn’t quite sure what it was. Then he heard her call out.

He was on his feet and rushing toward the door instantly. When he reached it, he rattled the knob but it was still locked.
